Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout Mexico on November 2nd and there are lots of other events the weekends before and after the celebration. Downtown streets are closed to traffic and dozens of colorful altars are installed, each an homage to a departed family member or friend. In the evening, the altars are illuminated with candles and the effect is beautiful and unforgettable. Life-size catrina dolls are constructed along the Malecon by area schools and remain for several weeks after the holiday. Young people dress up like catrinas and parade through the streets. This is a wonderful time to visit Chapala and enjoy a quintessential Mexican holiday.
